The festive season is fast approaching and that can only mean one thing; our social calendars will become jam-packed with various Christmas celebrations, often involving alcohol. But for almost a third of under 25’s, other teetotallers across various age groups and designated drivers, this year will be a dry Christmas. Attitudes towards drinking are clearly changing which is excellent news because drinking less alcohol could prevent 12,800 cancer cases per year in the UK. Even for those wanting to drink a little less over the festive period, non-alcoholic drink choices are quickly becoming mainstream so it’s never been easier to get into the Christmas spirit without the hangover! Here are some brilliant alcohol-free suggestions covering all the festive celebrations you’ll encounter this December.

For the office party bring along a premixed non-alcoholic drink like Teetotal GnT or Cuba Libre which are great substitutes for real thing but taste even better. Or if you want something that looks like you’re drinking a light larger or cider but with a softer sparkle, try some Kombucha brands like Left Field Kombucha or Clever Kombucha. They offer a variety of delicately flavoured fermented teas, full of vitamins, enzymes and probiotics.

For the family Christmas meal there are some brilliant alcohol-free wine companies like Cairn o’ Mohr; an amazing local winery in Errol, Scotland which does an award winning Elderflower Fizz that is perfect for a celebratory toast. Or ‘Shrb Prohibition Soda’ is a tasty apple cider vinegar based drink which provides enough sharpness to make it the perfect long sipping drink to accompany a turkey dinner.

Been invited to the neighbours’ party? Take along a case of non-alcoholic beer like Big Drop Brewing, Heineken 0.0 or Adnams Ghost Ship which are all perfect alternatives for the ‘real’ thing. Or throw together a batch of lovely alcohol-free mulled wine using Belvoir spiced winter berries cordial as the base, adding in clementine’s or other festive fruits and spices.

If you’re struggling for gift ideas, Smart Beer Club is great monthly subscription service for the craft beer connoisseur in the family, giving them the opportunity to try lots of different alcohol-free beer. Or for the gin-lover, gift a non-alcoholic spirit like Silk Tree Botanics or Chastity-No Sin Gin, which are packaged in beautiful, decorative bottles making them a brilliant ‘Secret Santa’ gift for your colleagues and friends. They have that distinctive botanical, juniper taste that you expect from gin and you can drink ‘em straight or add them to your favourite tonic and garnish with ice and a slice.

This list is certainly not extensive but it proves that there are plenty of non-alcoholic drinks that will appeal to an adult palate and that even without the alcohol you can have a very merry, mindful Christmas!
